Bridging the Gap: Addressing Financial Barriers in Adult Learning

In today’s rapidly changing world, access to education and continued learning remains one of the most powerful tools for personal and professional growth. Yet, for far too many learners, the path to gaining essential skills is obstructed by financial challenges that make pursuing traditional or online education nearly impossible. A recent Gallup and Lumina Foundation survey found that for U.S. adults without a college degree or credential, financial barriers remain the top reason they aren’t pursuing higher education.

Among adults who never enrolled or stopped before completion, more than half cited the cost of a degree or credential as the primary obstacle (NASFAA). Many adults navigating low-income situations, family responsibilities, or emotional challenges find themselves excluded from the upskilling opportunities that could change their lives.

While many platforms offer online courses—some even for free—the content often targets learners already equipped with foundational skills. Advanced technical training and complex professional development programs don’t meet the needs of those who are struggling to get started. The gap widens, leaving countless individuals behind.

As highlighted by Scholarship America, financial stress prevents many learners from completing their educational goals, and the solutions are complex and slow-moving (Scholarship America).
